Description:
This recording is published in reference to the Lateran Accords, signed on February 11, 1929 between Italy, represented by Benito Mussolini, and the Holy See. These agreements settled a political conflict that had pitted the Holy See against the Kingdom of Italy since the latter had taken Rome from the Papal States in 1870 to make it its capital. Their signature confirmed Catholicism as the state religion, defined today's Vatican City and limited the Pope's temporal power there. They served to calm political relations between the Italian state and the Holy See, while offering the regime the ultimately unsuccessful opportunity to fascize the Catholic Church.
